Hi! I’m Fleet, Fleet the dog. You’re standing on the best spot in Fleetwood for views and wind, and for getting your ears blown inside out.
This is the Mount and the whole town points towards it. Back in the 1830s, when they were planning Fleetwood, they ploughed straight lines from here to mark out the main streets.
A new holiday town for the merchants of Manchester and the mill workers of Lancashire.
That was the vision of entrepreneur Peter Fleetwood and architect Decimus Burton.
New homes, hotels, and the most modern town gasworks for power and lights- nowhere else like it in the 1840’s!
Fleetwood for Health and Happiness – that’s what the posters said.
And when the railway reached Fleetwood, you could catch the 6:30AM train from Manchester and be on the beach for 9 o'clock for a whole day at the seaside.
There were thousands of people up here in those days. Enjoying the view, watching the boats and ferries, eating fish and chips or fresh potted shrimps. And you could have afternoon tea at the pavilion.
Great scraps for dogs in those days! Must dash, my human’s getting lonely. See you later.
