Hello, I’m Fleet the dog. You can see me down there with my family - mother, the little one
and the baby.
We’re standing on the quayside, like generations of Fleetwood families before us, waiting for
the fishing boats to come home.
When the men went out to the fishing grounds, they could be gone for weeks and it was the
women who ran the families and the businesses and generally keep the town going!
There was always an aunt or a sister or a cousin or a neighbour to look in on you, to lend a
hand.
And when we heard the boats getting near we all dashed down to the quayside to wave
them home. We knew all the boats from the different sounds of their horns.
There was some homecoming then, when the crews got paid – kings for a day, they
were. They’d stop in to buy toys for the children in the shops at the top of town, and
sometimes even a bone for a dog!
They were touch times, but when we were all together it was worth it.Then three days later - they'd be off again back out to sea.
Listen, do you hear that horn? They’re coming home!
