When people come to Fleetwood, they often head straight for the sea. To see the views, and to visit me, Hesketh the rabbit.
But one of my favourite places is a few hops away from the coast - our Memorial Park.
We were all proud of the Fleetwood boys and men who went to fight in the Great War of 1914-18.
And of the families left at home who kept things going day to day. We’re tough in Fleetwood.
At the end of the war, the people of Fleetwood raised money to buy the old Warrenhurst Pleasure Ground and turn it into a park for everyone to share, with a war memorial at its heart.
There’s an avenue of trees planted by the children of those who would never return, and a figure of Freedom standing tall. Freedom is what we fought for after all.
There are other great statues in Fleetwood. You’ll find me on one of them – I wonder if you know which?
And there’s the statue of the family, waiting for the first sight of the fishing fleet returning.
They are every family of every fishermen of Fleetwood, standing at the water’s edge, waving them home.
It’s a sight I’ve seen myself, more times than I can count.
Well, that's Fleetwood. Thanks for joining me. Must hop off. Things to do.
