Stop 2: The Mount

Sea Defences Take me here now

Carl Green, Head of Engineering, talks about what Wyre Council are doing to safeguard Fleetwood and the coast.

'Sea Safe' with Carl Green

Battling the sea is not a new phenomenon in this part of the world. The West Lancashire legend of Singleton Thorpe tells the story of a lost village, swallowed by a huge wave from the Irish Sea during the reign of Queen Mary I in 1554. At very low tides some of the cobbled road can still be seen. 12 other villages aliong the North West coast have also been lost to the sea.

Sea levels have risen around the globe since the last Ice Age, about 7000 years ago, when the landscape of the Bay area was formed. Ice sheets and glaciers are melting due to human activity which is pushing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and warming up the planet. A sea level increase of 4mm a year does not seem like much but will make a huge difference to low lying Wyre. More storms and higher tides mean more flooding.

Starting at the Marine Hall, take a longer walk along the upper or lower promenade. The entire promenade is one long sea defence!
